PROBLEM

It’s only getting worse...

This app, built as an internal side project, was inspired by the events of Summer 2023 in NYC as the city was engulfed in a red haze of smokey air. The concept was simple, show the air quality index but in a fun and beautiful way.

Stylized night sky with stars, clouds, and a glowing orange sun shape forming the word Airpocalypse.

SOLUTION

An AQI app with adaptive scenery.

We built this simply because air quality data doesn't have to be boring. The project fused live environmental metrics with a generative graphics engine, implemented location-aware color grading, and introduced a reactive interface to turn dry numbers into a shifting, atmospheric canvas. It’s a utility that functions as a pocket art piece.

RESULTS

Refining The Visual Experience

The final build delivers immediate atmospheric context through color and motion rather than dense text. It successfully transforms a daily check-in into a moment of zen, merging accurate environmental reporting with a genuinely cool aesthetic.

City skyline obscured by dense orange smog with the Empire State Building visible through haze, accompanied by quote 'Well I thought it was a cute idea' and statistics on air particles, airpocalypse events, and NYC AQI.
